The Dangers of Entanglement:

A Safe Fence for Sasha

Sasha was able to meet some of our most seasoned volunteers who came from various regions in Oregon and Washington for her southwest Washington build. Previously, Sasha spent many hours a day in a 2x3 cage or she was tied to a zipline.

Entanglement is a serious risk to tethered dogs. As you can see below, Sasha would get herself in quite a tangled mess, which be life threatening if the line wraps around a dog's neck or limbs.

Volunteers create a space of freedom and safety from the dangers of a zipline. Run free Sasha! Visit this link to see more photos of her freedom day!

Life-Saving Critical Vet Care: Big's Story

In the wee hours of the morning, one of our beloved Fidos was fighting for his life.

We first met Big, in 2021 when our crew in Washington built a fence for Big and his friend Jewll.

This last month, Big was rushed to the ER vet as he had been vomiting excessively and was extremely lethargic. Thanks to our Nelson & Ginger Care Fund founded by our friend Angela, we were able to say “yes” to helping our sweet Fido. Big had a serious internal infection and he was diagnosed with a rare disorder called Megaesophagus, which decreases mobility in the muscles of the esophagus. Now, he must be fed meals upright with carefully measured soft dogfood. He has a long road to recovery and will be doing some outpatient treatment and will also need a special feeding chair.

His guardian, filled with gratitude, sent us this message: “I want to tell everyone from Fences For Fido, thank you so much for helping pay the bill at the vet. He was very sick and if he hadn't gone in, I would of lost my best friend and my service animal companion, if they hadn't helped.”

So that we can continue to provide life-saving vet care for our Fidos in the future, please help replenish these funds by donating to the Nelson & Ginger Care Fund. We still need to raise $4,000 to replenish the funds for Big's care.

It takes a village to ensure that our Fidos are safe and healthy, and we’re so grateful for your support of any amount! Donors, we thank YOU for helping dogs who need urgent care.

Fences For Fido was formed back in 2009 to fill the gap in our community by providing free fences, dog houses and critical vet care for dogs living outside on chains in Oregon and Washington. Together, in the last 13 years, we have unchained more than 3000 dogs in the Pacific Northwest including in Central Oregon. Unchaining dogs is the heart of our mission. That’s why in 2013, Fences For Fido championed legislation in Oregon that limited tethering and elevated shelter standards, improving the lives of dogs living outside.

It’s in that spirit, in 2014, Fences For Fido began building fences for dogs on the Warm Springs Reservation, and today we serve as the only animal-welfare organization authorized by the Tribal Council. To that end, Fences For Fido extended our mission and compassion to fill the gap on the Reservation so that families with pets have access to spay and neuter and other important veterinary care services. Just like in 2009, when we founded Fences For Fido, our hearts recognized, if not us, who will help the dogs in Warm Springs?

To that end, we implemented a 4-prong action plan to help bridge the gap in access to life saving care and services on the Warm Springs Reservation, which include:

  1. High-volume spay and neuter clinics for dogs and cats and a trusted rehoming program for dogs and puppies in coordination with our shelter/rescue partners.
  2. Veterinary vaccine clinics for both dogs and cats as the nearest veterinarian is 20 miles away.
  3. Supplemental monthly pet food banks to help fill the bellies of the dogs and cats on the Reservation.
  4. Building fences and providing dog houses to dogs on chains and/or living in dangerous circumstances.

Please invite your dog-loving friends to this very special event. Festivities include live music and silent auction. In addition, your event ticket includes wine or beer, free non-alcoholic beverages, and hors d'oeuvres.
You won’t want to miss this exclusive event! Register today as seating is extremely limited to 40 guests.

Bridget, Bandit & Bruiser

We first met big, fluffy Bruiser seven years ago when we build a fence for him at a different location. Later, Bridget & brother Bandit joined this family and now they are three matching happy spirits They have a guardian who loves them and was incredibly concerned for their welfare. Now having moved, while these three are able to sleep indoors at night, their outdoor daytime play included escaping their small yard by knocking down an existing fence. Once escaped, they could be found harassing the neighborhood chickens in which animal law-enforcement issued a hefty fine to their guardian. On one of these escape-adventures, one of these Fidos encountered a car which hit him and after a big trip to the vet, luckily, he is now okay! With all said, we are glad this guardian reached out to us again for help and this beautiful crew of heart-happy volunteers were able to build a strong, sturdy, safe space! Bruiser is now an official Emotional Support Animal (ESA). You can view more photos by visiting this link.

Doghouse Delivery Day Success!

We had an incredible display of generosity thanks to all of the donors who quickly stepped forward to donate funds for much needed shelter for dogs in Warm Springs! Doghouses arrived in September ahead of our October 8th delivery date! Volunteers delivered the doghouses just in time for winter weather.
Thank you to everyone who helped us meet our fundraising goal! This much needed love and action could not happen without you.
Also, a big thank you to Central Oregon's KTVZ - NewsChannel 21 for announcing our Doghouse Drive!

Sitka & Juneau

Sitka & Juneau spend all day tethered outdoors while their guardian works. Sitka (below) often breaks free of his tethers and roams the neighborhood and puts himself in many unsafe situations. We're so grateful, we can help Sitka & Juneau and other dogs just like them! Veterinary care is so important too. As you can see, Sitka has a skin allergy. Fortunately, Sitka is already receiving care for his skin thanks to the Nelson & Ginger Care Fund.
Their fence build is on November 27, 2022. You can volunteer for any of our builds by visiting this link or you can donate here.
Thank you!
Volunteers are the heartbeat of Fences For Fido!

Fences For Fido was founded with the sole mission of providing a better life for dogs who are otherwise experiencing a lessor quality of life due to a lack of resources within their family. As a non-profit, to accomplish this mission, we rely heavily on donated funds and material resources. It's then volunteer hands and bodies who are able to put those resources to use. Volunteers are our heartbeat, because without them we would not be able to accomplish the physical love-in-action it takes to build safe enclosures for dogs and assemble cozy doghouses to protect dogs from cold, rain and the sun in warm weather. We always have Fences For Fido leaders on site at our builds, so fence building experience is never needed if it's your first time! You can always find a list of available builds here and registration on our website is free and easy. If you have any questions, please email: This email address is being protected from spambots. No More Days on a Chain, Coco & Blueberry

Coco & Blueberry only knew long days on chains in their fenceless yard. Our Southwest Washington client outreach coordinator, Becky and her husband and crew leader, Mike, lead their team of volunteers to make sure this sweet pup duo received the freedom they needed from a life of chains. Becky and Mike have been with Fences For Fido since 2014 and we consider them experts with all things fence building. They are great to work with and love welcoming new volunteers!
You can be added to their region's Fences For Fido Facebook page to get alerts to builds in their area. You can also go to the Fences For Fido website to see available builds for volunteers in both Washington and Oregon.

Special Spaces for Woki and Ford

Fourteen-year-old Ford and her young protege, 10-month-old, Woki will be receiving their freedom and safety with a sturdy enclosure in just 2 weeks!
We felt grateful to be able to help when we received the application from their disabled guardian who lives in an RV on family property. The small indoor space makes it difficult for Ford and Woki to have the space they need to exercise and without fencing around the property, it's unsafe to be outdoors and therefore cables are used to restrain. Since Ford often finds young Woki a little rambunctious, volunteers will also be installing a secondary fence panel on build day, to give Woki and Ford their own outdoor space when needed. You can help sponsor Ford and Woki by clicking this link.

In just a few short hours, you can change a dog’s life forever – no experience necessary!

Fences for Fido is an award-winning, non-profit organization that builds donor-funded fences free of charge for families who keep their dogs on chains, tethers and in small enclosures. We also provide:

  • A warm, insulated dog house
  • Spay/neuter services
  • Critical vet care

In the past 10 years, Fences For Fido has unchained over 2000 dogs in NW Oregon, central Oregon and SW Washington!

BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP!

  • We are actively seeking volunteers throughout our service region to help us continue our work. IT’S FUN!
  • You don’t need any fence-building experience
  • You can volunteer as much or as little as you like.

There’s no minimum number of builds or hours for being part of our pack. However, because our fence builds are considered construction sites, you must be 18 or older.

DO YOU HAVE FENCE-BUILDING OR CONSTRUCTION EXPERIENCE? We’d love to welcome you as a Crew Leader to help draw up simple fence plans, be in charge of pick-up and delivery of supplies, and lead a fabulous group of volunteers in building our fences. Again, you can volunteer as much or as little as you like, and we provide all training, equipment, and materials.

Register to be a volunteer here – then check out our calendar to sign up for your first build!

The mission of Fences For Fido is to improve the quality of life for chained dogs living outside in the elements day and night. But along the way, it has changed all of our lives as well.

Each and every Saturday morning, we transform the lives of dogs living outside on the end of chains. Fences For Fido is a real labor of love, and as such we wanted to share with you several of the stories that truly do capture the very heart of Fences For Fido far better than any words.

Love in action.

On Thanksgiving evening, Fences For Fido was honored to receive the Sam Simon Award on Fox's nationally televised All Star Dog Rescue Celebration.

Our hope is to inspire dog lovers across the country to follow their hearts and commit to making a difference in the lives of chained dogs everywhere.

Our profound gratitude to the Fox Network and the All Star Dog Rescue Celebration team for sharing the stories of some of the nearly 1,300 dogs we’ve unchained on this journey. While it may not seem possible, we know each and every dog by name, all of whom continue to live within our hearts and inspire us to do what we do each and every day.

“Not the least hard thing to bear when they go from us, these quiet friends, is that they carry away with them so many years of our own lives.” John Galsworthy

The price we pay for loving dogs is that we will have to say goodbye someday – and always too soon. We each know this all too well. In fact, it’s been said that this may be the only real flaw of dogs – the painful fact that their lives are so much shorter than ours.

Today we all feel this familiar sadness because we’ve learned that Chopper – Fences for Fido’s very first unchained dog – died this week due to complications of cancer. With the passing of this stately, gentle old friend, we want to pause and remember what a mark Chopper left on our world. He was once a lonely, scruffy backyard dog. But everything changed, practically overnight, when a group of Portland friends met Chopper and realized they could do something to help. What they did changed Chopper’s life and his family’s life, and then that change rippled across the community and just kept going. Chopper galvanized a mission and a passion that continues to grow today.

Drafted and supported by a broad coalition, the law adds an important tool to address the public safety and animal welfare problems presented by chronically-chained dogs in communities across Oregon. Like all laws, this one is intended to be enforced by appropriate law enforcement officers. Fences For Fido does not have enforcement authority.

Anti Tethering Law and How FFF can help you video *** Click Here ***

 The law does the following:

Limits tethering to:

  1. Ten hours (in a 24 hour period) when dog is tethered to a stationary object;
  2. Fifteen hours (in a 24 hour period) when dog is tethered to a running line, “zip line”, trolley, or pulley system;

By Patti Loverink, Fences For Fido Co-Chair

In 2009, a group of friends gathered together around a kitchen table and dreamed of an organization, which would be called “Fences For Fido.” On May 23 that year, together they built fence number one. They became the first volunteers for Fences For Fido. And even today—as we’ve unchained hundreds of dogs and expanded across more Oregon and Washington communities—every aspect of the organization is still operated, managed, produced and built… BY VOLUNTEERS. Every single person.

It doesn’t take paid staff to be buttoned up with a robust organization chart and committees overseeing every aspect and detail of Fences For Fido. What’s truly remarkable and worth repeating, reiterating, and restating, is that dedicated volunteers—who collectively give hundreds of hours each month—make all of this happen. Here’s a bit more about how we do it:

By Patti Loverink, Fences For Fido Co-Chair

Over the month, our community has mourned the loss of a Fido. And although we never built a fence for him, he was and always will be our beloved Fido. He died without a chain and tight collar. And he died, knowing he was loved, comforted by gentle pets, soft words, and warm blankets.

14-year-old, life-long chained Fido Lucky first came to us as a neighbor referral. We had made plans for his fence on 3/16 and had arranged his vet care for very serious, painful internal infections.

Please check out our new YouTube channel to see fabulous videos of our furry friends in enjoying their new found freedom.

We update the content regularly so that you can see the impact a new fence can have on a fido's life.

Our YouTube channel is great way to share these beautiful stories first hand with you!

Super volunteers Vicki and Jeff have figured out an amazingly swell and safe toy that all our Fidos just love as several dogs display their delight in the videos below.  A local tennis club donates barrels and barrels of used tennis balls, Jeff drills holes in them, and Vicki scours thrift stores and other low-cost sources for soft blankets and material that she can cut into strips, braid them, and then thread the braids through the tennis balls.
