Become a Volunteer

CHANGE A LIFE 800

Welcome! We’re so glad you’re here!
Volunteering for Fences For Fido is a life-changing labor of love. A morning spent unchaining a dog is a gift for the dog-lover’s heart.

If you’ve ever worried about a lonely chained dog, we know you’ve wished that someone could do something to help.
With Fences For Fido, YOU can be that someone.
We’ll show you how.

In just one morning, you can join like-minded people in changing life for a dog, for a family, and sometimes for an entire neighborhood. And you’ll be finished by noon. There’s no better way to kick off your weekend.

Here’s how to get started:

  1. Watch our 4-minute how-to video to see how easy it is to build a fence. You don’t need any special skills or equipment, and our team leaders will guide you along the way.
  2. Check out our FAQ page to learn more about what we do and why.
  3. Click over to our volunteer sign-up page to see upcoming volunteer opportunities. You’ll see each dog’s story, their city, and the date of their build. After you sign up, you’ll receive a confirmation email with the exact location, any special instructions, and a contact person for your build.

It’s really that simple!
Reach out to our executive director, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. , with any questions. We’re glad you’re here and we want to help!

The Dangers of Entanglement:

A Safe Fence for Sasha

Sasha was able to meet some of our most seasoned volunteers who came from various regions in Oregon and Washington for her southwest Washington build. Previously, Sasha spent many hours a day in a 2x3 cage or she was tied to a zipline.

Entanglement is a serious risk to tethered dogs. As you can see below, Sasha would get herself in quite a tangled mess, which be life threatening if the line wraps around a dog's neck or limbs.

Volunteers create a space of freedom and safety from the dangers of a zipline. Run free Sasha! Visit this link to see more photos of her freedom day!

Life-Saving Critical Vet Care: Big's Story

In the wee hours of the morning, one of our beloved Fidos was fighting for his life.

We first met Big, in 2021 when our crew in Washington built a fence for Big and his friend Jewll.

This last month, Big was rushed to the ER vet as he had been vomiting excessively and was extremely lethargic. Thanks to our Nelson & Ginger Care Fund founded by our friend Angela, we were able to say “yes” to helping our sweet Fido. Big had a serious internal infection and he was diagnosed with a rare disorder called Megaesophagus, which decreases mobility in the muscles of the esophagus. Now, he must be fed meals upright with carefully measured soft dogfood. He has a long road to recovery and will be doing some outpatient treatment and will also need a special feeding chair.

His guardian, filled with gratitude, sent us this message: “I want to tell everyone from Fences For Fido, thank you so much for helping pay the bill at the vet. He was very sick and if he hadn't gone in, I would of lost my best friend and my service animal companion, if they hadn't helped.”

So that we can continue to provide life-saving vet care for our Fidos in the future, please help replenish these funds by donating to the Nelson & Ginger Care Fund. We still need to raise $4,000 to replenish the funds for Big's care.

It takes a village to ensure that our Fidos are safe and healthy, and we’re so grateful for your support of any amount! Donors, we thank YOU for helping dogs who need urgent care.

Wine and Wags

WineAndWagsArticle

Join us for an evening of Wine & Wags as we gather together as kindred spirits to support our important efforts on the Warm Springs Reservation. Click here to register!

Fences For Fido was formed back in 2009 to fill the gap in our community by providing free fences, dog houses and critical vet care for dogs living outside on chains in Oregon and Washington. Together, in the last 13 years, we have unchained more than 3000 dogs in the Pacific Northwest including in Central Oregon. Unchaining dogs is the heart of our mission. That’s why in 2013, Fences For Fido championed legislation in Oregon that limited tethering and elevated shelter standards, improving the lives of dogs living outside.

It’s in that spirit, in 2014, Fences For Fido began building fences for dogs on the Warm Springs Reservation, and today we serve as the only animal-welfare organization authorized by the Tribal Council. To that end, Fences For Fido extended our mission and compassion to fill the gap on the Reservation so that families with pets have access to spay and neuter and other important veterinary care services. Just like in 2009, when we founded Fences For Fido, our hearts recognized, if not us, who will help the dogs in Warm Springs?

To that end, we implemented a 4-prong action plan to help bridge the gap in access to life saving care and services on the Warm Springs Reservation, which include:

  1. High-volume spay and neuter clinics for dogs and cats and a trusted rehoming program for dogs and puppies in coordination with our shelter/rescue partners.
  2. Veterinary vaccine clinics for both dogs and cats as the nearest veterinarian is 20 miles away.
  3. Supplemental monthly pet food banks to help fill the bellies of the dogs and cats on the Reservation.
  4. Building fences and providing dog houses to dogs on chains and/or living in dangerous circumstances.

Please invite your dog-loving friends to this very special event. Festivities include live music and silent auction. In addition, your event ticket includes wine or beer, free non-alcoholic beverages, and hors d'oeuvres.
You won’t want to miss this exclusive event! Register today as seating is extremely limited to 40 guests.

November 2022 News

Bridget, Bandit & Bruiser

We first met big, fluffy Bruiser seven years ago when we build a fence for him at a different location. Later, Bridget & brother Bandit joined this family and now they are three matching happy spirits They have a guardian who loves them and was incredibly concerned for their welfare. Now having moved, while these three are able to sleep indoors at night, their outdoor daytime play included escaping their small yard by knocking down an existing fence. Once escaped, they could be found harassing the neighborhood chickens in which animal law-enforcement issued a hefty fine to their guardian. On one of these escape-adventures, one of these Fidos encountered a car which hit him and after a big trip to the vet, luckily, he is now okay! With all said, we are glad this guardian reached out to us again for help and this beautiful crew of heart-happy volunteers were able to build a strong, sturdy, safe space! Bruiser is now an official Emotional Support Animal (ESA). You can view more photos by visiting this link.

Doghouse Delivery Day Success!

We had an incredible display of generosity thanks to all of the donors who quickly stepped forward to donate funds for much needed shelter for dogs in Warm Springs! Doghouses arrived in September ahead of our October 8th delivery date! Volunteers delivered the doghouses just in time for winter weather.
Thank you to everyone who helped us meet our fundraising goal! This much needed love and action could not happen without you.
Also, a big thank you to Central Oregon's KTVZ - NewsChannel 21 for announcing our Doghouse Drive!

Sitka & Juneau

Sitka & Juneau spend all day tethered outdoors while their guardian works. Sitka (below) often breaks free of his tethers and roams the neighborhood and puts himself in many unsafe situations. We're so grateful, we can help Sitka & Juneau and other dogs just like them! Veterinary care is so important too. As you can see, Sitka has a skin allergy. Fortunately, Sitka is already receiving care for his skin thanks to the Nelson & Ginger Care Fund.
Their fence build is on November 27, 2022. You can volunteer for any of our builds by visiting this link or you can donate here.
Thank you!
